Building the Future of the Trades: The Huot House Workforce Development Program

The Lakes Region Builders & Remodelers Association (LRBRA) is proud to partner with the Huot Technical Center and other industry partners on one of the region’s most impactful workforce development initiatives - the Huot House program.

Through this hands-on learning experience, students enrolled in Huot Technical Center’s Building Construction and Plumbing & Heating programs construct a fully functional home from start to finish. Under the guidance of experienced Huot instructors and LRBRA member professionals, students participate in every phase of building a Tiny Home.

Now in its ninth build, the Huot House program blends classroom instruction with real-world application, preparing students with the technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional standards required in today’s construction industry. Each home is built inside the school’s construction shop over the academic year. The result is a high-quality, energy-efficient home that meets all current building codes and is typically ready for sale by summer.

Proceeds from the sale of each Huot House are reinvested directly into future workforce development initiatives, program growth, and student scholarships, creating a sustainable model that benefits students, industry partners, and the broader community.

Beyond skill development, the Huot House initiative addresses two critical community needs: workforce readiness and affordable housing. As the skilled trades workforce continues to age, programs like this play a vital role in preparing the next generation of trades professionals. At the same time, each completed home contributes to attainable housing options within the Lakes Region.

The Huot House is more than a student project; it is a true partnership between education and industry. LRBRA members actively support the program by mentoring students, sharing real-world expertise, providing internship and scholarship opportunities, and expanding professional networks that help launch successful careers in the skilled trades.

This is more than a house. It’s an investment in education, opportunity, and the future of the skilled trades - and a testament to what’s possible when industry and education build together.

"By being exposed into the trade of building and creating things with my hands, I have learned so much about myself. My dream is to one day own my own business developing houses. I competed in the Skills USA competition this spring and it was a great way for me to prove to, not only myself, but the people at the competition, such as industry professionals, my abilities. By having the good fortune to be able to explore my interest at such a young age, I was able to have a career figured out early."

"The Building Construction 1 & 2 at the Huot Tech Center truly captures a working environment in the trades, and gives us knowledge that is applicable in any field. We had many visits from Lakes Region Builder members who stop in and talk with us. I have been introduced to many local tradesman from many fields, from builders, window experts, flooring, home audio and more!"
- Brad from Laconia High School
"After a friend shared with me "life as an Electrician" and what they do, I was hooked. I already have a job with a company and it is very exciting and extremely fast paced work. I am happy to be a part of construction because it gives me a sense of accomplishment seeing what I have created afterwards. It is hard work but I know in the end it will make me a better man. The Golden Hammer Award is helpful for young people just getting into the trades to acquire quality tools."
- Austin from Belmont High School
